El Niño Is Turning Up the Heat. Is Your Home Ready?

As this record-breaking summer winds down, another potentially hotter year may be on the horizon. The cooler months ahead offer homeowners an opportunity to prepare their homes for the extreme heat El Niño could help bring in 2027.

After months of high temperatures, August can feel like the home stretch. Fall is approaching, air conditioners will soon get a break, and before long, homeowners will be thinking about heating rather than cooling their homes.


But this may not be the time to put extreme heat entirely out of mind.


An El Niño that developed rapidly this year is continuing to strengthen. In August, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) reported a greater-than-90 % chance that it will become a very strong El Niño during the fall and winter of 2026–27. The World Meteorological Organization has also noted that an El Niño near the end of 2026 increases the chances that 2027 could become another record-breaking year for global temperatures.


That doesn't mean we can predict exactly how hot next summer will be in Virginia. El Niño affects weather differently from place to place, and many other factors determine our day-to-day and seasonal weather. But its timing is significant because the effect of El Niño on global temperatures can lag behind the warming of the tropical Pacific Ocean.


For homeowners, there is a practical takeaway: the cooler months ahead may be the best time to prepare for the next stretch of extreme heat.


Why El Niño can make a hot world even hotter


El Niño is part of a naturally occurring climate pattern in the tropical Pacific Ocean known as the El Niño–Southern Oscillation, or ENSO. During an El Niño event, changes in Pacific Ocean temperatures and trade winds allow more heat from the ocean to enter the atmosphere, influencing weather patterns around the world.


El Niño isn't responsible for the long-term rise in global temperatures. That underlying warming is driven primarily by increasing concentrations of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere. Instead, El Niño temporarily adds to that existing warming by shifting heat between the ocean and atmosphere. When a strong El Niño develops on top of already elevated global temperatures, the combination can help push temperatures to new records.


This year's event could be particularly noteworthy. NOAA's August outlook said there was a 69% chance that the El Niño during October through December could reach a strength exceeding previous events in the agency's record dating to 1950. Because the global temperature response to El Niño typically comes later, climate researchers are paying particular attention to 2027.


Most homeowners can't do much about the temperature outside. There is, however, quite a bit they can do to help their homes handle it.



Start at the top: Take a closer look at your roof


Your roof experiences much more intense heat than the temperature reported in the weather forecast. According to the U.S. Department of Energy, a conventional roof can reach 150 degrees Fahrenheit or more on a sunny summer afternoon.


That repeated exposure matters. Recent research from the National Institute of Standards and Technology examined how asphalt shingles—the most common type of steep-slope roofing in the United States—are affected by conditions including extreme heat, ultraviolet radiation, humidity and repeated temperature changes. Weathering can alter the physical and mechanical properties of shingles and the adhesive that helps hold them in place.


Fall is a good time to have an older roof inspected for signs of deterioration, particularly if you have noticed cracked, curling, loose or missing shingles or problems around flashing. A professional inspection can also identify issues that may not be obvious from the ground.


If your roof is approaching replacement age, you can also ask your roofing contractor about reflective or "cool" roofing products. Cool roofs are designed to reflect more sunlight and absorb less solar energy.


Under similar sunny conditions, the Department of Energy says some reflective roofs can remain more than 50 degrees cooler than conventional roofs. The right choice depends on your home, roofing material and climate, so replacing a sound roof simply to make it more reflective may not make financial sense. If replacement is already on the horizon, however, heat performance is worth including in the conversation.


Give your attic some attention


Between the roof and your living space is another important line of defense: the attic.


Insulation slows the movement of heat into your home, while air sealing helps prevent unwanted air movement between the attic and conditioned living spaces. Together, they can make it easier for your cooling system to maintain a comfortable temperature by preventing heat from entering from above.


Before adding more insulation, consider having the attic evaluated for air leaks around light fixtures, wiring, plumbing penetrations, duct chases, attic access doors and other openings. The Department of Energy recommends air-sealing these areas before adding or upgrading insulation. An energy audit can be particularly useful in an older home because it can help identify where improvements are likely to have the greatest impact.


Pay special attention if your home's HVAC equipment or ductwork is located in the attic. On very hot days, that equipment may be operating in one of the hottest parts of the house, making proper duct sealing and insulation even more important.


Don't wait for a heat wave to find out your air conditioner is struggling


When temperatures remain high for days at a time, cooling systems may run for long periods with few opportunities to catch up. A system that has been functioning adequately under ordinary summer conditions may have more difficulty during sustained extreme heat.


That makes fall or spring a better time to address problems than the first 100-degree day of the year. The Department of Energy recommends regular professional HVAC maintenance, cleaning or replacing filters as needed. Homeowners should also keep leaves, grass and other debris from accumulating around outdoor equipment and pay attention to warning signs such as unusual noises, frequent cycling or difficulty keeping the house at the thermostat setting.


If an aging system is likely to need replacement in the next few years, the off-season also gives you more time to research options rather than making an expensive decision during an emergency. A qualified HVAC professional can evaluate whether the existing system is properly sized for the home and whether other improvements—such as air sealing, insulation or duct repairs—could reduce the amount of cooling the house needs.


Think about stopping heat before it gets inside


Windows can account for a significant portion of a home's heat gain and loss, which makes them another area worth considering when planning renovations.


If window replacement is already on your list, look beyond the number of panes. Low-emissivity, or low-e, coatings can reduce heat transfer, while the window's Solar Heat Gain Coefficient indicates how much solar radiation passes through and is converted into heat inside the home. Some spectrally selective low-e coatings can filter a large share of the sun's heat-producing infrared radiation while still allowing visible daylight into the room.


You don't necessarily need to replace your windows, either. Depending on the house, exterior shading such as awnings, shutters, overhangs or strategically located landscaping can intercept sunlight before it reaches the glass. That's different from closing an interior curtain after sunlight has already passed through the window.


Trees can also provide valuable shade, especially on the west and southwest sides of a house, though they need to be carefully selected and located. Keep mature trees healthy and have damaged, dead or precariously positioned limbs evaluated, particularly when branches could threaten the roof during a storm.


Make your home more resilient when the power goes out


Extreme heat and electricity demand often arrive together. A home that resists heat effectively has an advantage if the air conditioning stops working: it generally takes longer for outdoor heat to enter.


That is another reason improvements such as attic insulation, air sealing, reflective roofing and energy-efficient windows can be considered more than just energy-saving measures. They can also make a home more resilient.


Some homeowners may want to consider backup power as well, particularly if outages are common or household members depend on electrically powered medical equipment. Battery systems are one option, including systems paired with rooftop solar. Permanently installed standby generators are another option, but they require careful installation, operation and maintenance due to carbon monoxide, electrical and fire hazards. Any permanent system should be installed in accordance with the manufacturer's requirements and applicable building and electrical codes.


Use the cooler months to prepare

By October or November, the oppressive days of summer can seem a long way off. That distance can actually be useful.


Roofing contractors, HVAC professionals and energy auditors can evaluate parts of the house that struggled this summer. Homeowners considering insulation, air sealing, window improvements or other projects have time to compare options rather than making decisions in the middle of an emergency.


Even relatively simple maintenance can be completed before equipment is subjected to another season of heavy demand.


No improvement can make a home immune to extreme weather, and no one knows exactly what temperatures Virginia will experience next summer. But the broader trend toward hotter conditions, combined with a strengthening El Niño, is a good reminder that preparing for heat can be treated much like preparing for cold, wind or storms: the best time to strengthen your home is before the weather puts it to the test.
