Who We Are
Mutual Assurance is a society of approximately 20,000 members in Virginia who have joined together to insure each other’s homes. Founded in 1794, we have protected some of Virginia’s famous historic houses, along with the homes of many of your neighbors and friends.

What is a mutual insurance company?
Generally speaking, a mutual insurance company is an insurer owned by its policyholders, operating primarily for their benefit rather than for external shareholders.

What makes us unique?
Mutual Assurance continues to use the same business model that was established when the company was founded in 1794. What distinguishes us from other mutual insurance companies is that we offer a perpetual homeowner policy that never expires as long as the conditions of membership are met. New applicants pay a one-time premium to become a member, followed by low annual assessments that are a fraction of the premium. This means significant savings over the life of the policy.
It is the way home insurance is meant to be.
