High energy costs—driven by extreme heat, data center demand, and persistent inflation—are putting pressure on households. Rewiring America, a nonprofit organization focused on electrifying homes, communities, and businesses to combat climate change and improve health, said in a recent release.

Unfortunately for many homeowners, Federal home energy tax credits are set to expire on December 31, 2025. Specifically, the Energy Efficient Home Improvement Credit and the Residential Clean Energy Credit will no longer be available for improvements made after this date.

The Save on Better Appliances campaign

In response to the expiring tax credits, Rewiring America has created its Save on Better Appliances campaign to help homeowners before the end of the year. The campaign showcases new pathways to long-term energy affordability by highlighting the benefits of modern electric appliances, such as heat pumps, heat pump water heaters, and rooftop solar. These appliances can help families cut their energy bills, boost comfort, and protect against future price shocks. The campaign emphasizes the importance of these upgrades for long-term energy affordability and provides resources and tools to assist homeowners in maximizing the benefits of these incentives.

The Save on Better Appliances campaign, running through the end of November, includes:

  • A central hub to learn about expiring federal credits, explore local incentives, and connect with trusted contractors.

  • Free weekly online drop-in sessions to help homeowners navigate the upgrade process.

  • Contractor tools, including the Contractor Finder, will soon integrate the BetterHVAC directory for top-rated installers.

“These popular federal credits were meant to be there when families needed them,” said Rewiring America CEO Ari Matusiak. “With Congress moving to end them early, it’s smart to act now. The comfort, savings, and long-term value of these upgrades are here to stay—and we have tools to help homeowners move forward whenever the time is right. And though federal tax breaks are ending, many state, local, and utility programs can help families reduce upfront costs for home upgrades."

Rewiring America is also partnering with companies and homeowners in Virginia to electrify homes and communities through various initiatives. They have partnered with local contractors to offer discounted pricing on efficient heat pumps, particularly in Central Virginia. Additionally, they are collaborating with organizations like LEAP and Power Forward Communities to support energy efficiency upgrades and reduce utility bills for residents. This partnership aims to enhance energy efficiency and promote a sustainable energy future in Virginia.
